5 skin-tastic tips for Healthy Aging Month
You may not be able to stop Father Time from marching on, but you can slow him down. Recommit to yourself this Healthy Aging Month. Take control of “extrinsic aging” – lifestyle and environmental choices that cause your skin to age before its time.
  • The No. 1 best thing you can do for your skin? Slap on the sunscreen! Not just any sun protection will do. Choose what’s a “broad-spectrum,” product that protects from UVA and UVB rays and with an SPF of at least 30. Wear daily, even when it’s overcast.
  • Are you applying sunscreen the right way? During a long day at a beach, you should use from one-quarter to one-half of an 8-ounce bottle. If you’re swimming or sweating a lot, reapply. Don’t overlook areas like the tops of your feet and ears, or lips.
  • There is no such thing as a “healthy” tan. If you use a tanning bed, stop. Self-tanning products have never been easier to apply (no streaks!) and create a natural-looking (not orange!) tan for even the palest among us.
  • Tobacco products aren’t good for any aspect of our body, including its largest organ: the skin. Smoking accelerates the rate skin aging. Wrinkles look deeper. Your complexion appears lifeless, especially when compared to non-smoking peers.
  • Adopt an active lifestyle and nutritious diet. Exercise boosts immunity and circulation – great for your skin. Antioxidant-rich fresh fruits and raw vegetables help prevent premature damage. Refined carbs and sugars do the opposite.

Fool-proof ways to “fall-proof” your skin
As the weather cools and days get shorter, concerns over prickly heat and sunburn subside – only to have dryness and flare-ups of chronic conditions take their place. Be vigilant about products and routines year-round for the beauty and health of your skin.
  • Outwit “autumn skin” – Cool and dry air sucks the moisture out of your skin, creating a leathery texture, sallowness, and flaking. Dry skin makes fine lines and wrinkles look worse. Just as your wardrobe changes in the fall, beauty products should evolve with the seasons. We can help select moisturizers and other products that give your skin the extra protection and nourishment it needs to thrive in the harshest weather. How your skin looks on the outside also depends on what goes inside your body. Stay hydrated even as temps drop. Drink lots of water.
  • Prevent or control flares – Harsh, changing environments and low levels of sunlight give rise to some of the most common and exasperating skin conditions that we see in our office: dandruff, psoriasis, eczema, and the patches and acne-like bumps of keratosis pilaris. All conditions mentioned here can be relieved by regularly moisturizing, keeping stress in check, staying active, and eating a balanced diet. Sugars and stress, for example, are increasingly problematic “triggers” as the busy holidays approach and many crave comfort foods in the fall and winter.
A healthy lifestyle certainly helps. But we also have specialized therapies and professional-grade products tailored to your needs to ease fall’s worst effects on your skin.
