Avoiding the bugs of summer
Summer is a time of sunshine, warmth and outdoor activities. However, this is also the time when annoying insects become active. Irritating bug bites and the resultant itching, scars, marks, skin infections and worse could take the fun out of summer.

Some of the following preventative strategies may help you beat summer bugs:

Mosquitoes are responsible for spreading various diseases apart from being a nuisance. They are most active during dawn and dusk, and staying indoors during these times is an effective way to avoid being bitten. If you must go out, wear long sleeves and long pants or skirts and use bug repellants.

Despite being a vital part of nature, the sting of bees and wasps could be dangerous, even fatal. Repellents won’t help much, and avoidance is best. Avoid garbage bins where wasps gather. Bee attacks could be minimized by avoiding flowering plants, wearing light colored clothing, and not using scented shampoos or perfume. Avoid sudden movements which may attract their attention.

Black flies are more prevalent from May to August and likelier to attack during morning, late afternoon, and early evening hours. Their presence is heavy just before a storm and in wooded areas. Covering up is the best mode of defense, as is using a repellant. Avoid dark colored clothing.

Apart from causing itching and red marks, ticks can transmit diseases. They are found among tall grassy trails and wooded areas, and can be avoided by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants and closed shoes with no skin exposed. Check yourself and your pets for ticks if you had been outdoors.

A factor to be considered if you are applying sunscreen and bug repellant consecutively is that the efficacy and effectiveness of both products will be diminished as a result of application in this manner. Sunscreen is a vital component of your armor against skin cancer and you stand a higher risk of developing the disease if you don’t pay attention to its proper application. Therefore, sunscreen should always be considered as a priority. Avoidance and covering up are the best methods of keeping bugs at bay.
