Dealing with TMJ and TMD
The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ), or jaw joint, is one of the most flexible and mobile joints in our body. It connects the lower jawbone (mandible) to the temporal bones of the skull, enabling jaw movements.

These movements could become limited and extremely painful when a person is afflicted with Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). The exact causes of TMD are not known, but it is believed that genetics, injuries, grinding and clenching of teeth (bruxism), conditions affecting joints in the body like arthritis and stress, play a part. TMD, depending on its severity, can even affect a person’s ability to breathe, talk, chew, swallow, and express themselves.

TMD symptoms could include one or more of the following:
  • Dull pain or stiffness in jaw muscles
  • Pain in neck and shoulders
  • Painful clicking, popping or grating sounds in jaw joints when opening or closing mouth
  • Limited movement or locking of jaws
  • Chronic headaches
  • Changes in ‘bite’
  • Dizziness
  • Ear pain, pressure, fullness, and ringing in ears
  • Vision problems
If symptoms persist or the pain is unbearable, a visit to the dentist may be necessary. Sometimes, this discomfort is temporary and proper care and non-surgical treatments may bring relief. Surgery is also an option. A mouth guard may help to a great extent in tackling bruxism.
