Do Your Present And Future Self A Favor: Ask About Therapy For Sleep Apnea, Snoring

You know our services go beyond clean teeth and gums. Dr. Smida offers the latest therapies for mouth and whole-body health. Treatments like dental appliances are comfortable alternatives to CPAP if you have sleep apnea. Restoring quality rest may add quality years to your life.

Recently, researchers at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in London presented studies that connected the dots between sleep-disordered breathing and substances associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Past research documented links between sleep apnea and dementia, but these are the first long-term studies to connect breathing disturbances and beat-amyloid deposits. Clumps of these proteins are hallmarks of Alzheimer’s.

Though otherwise healthy and free of risk factors (like the “Alzheimer’s gene”), 70-somethings with sleep-disordered breathing had greater increases in beta-amyloid buildup over a three-year period than counterparts who didn’t have breathing problems. Why?

  • It’s thought the brain “clears up” amyloid deposits during sleep. Deprived of uninterrupted deep sleep, your brain can’t wash away toxins that build up over the day.
  • Oxygen deprivation is also thought to trigger damaging amyloid plaques.

A good night’s rest is reason enough to visit Dr. Smida, but dental appliances may prevent or slow the onset of Alzheimer’s and dementia for the long haul.

  • Restless sleep
  • Waking to use the bathroom one or more times a night
  • Waking to drink water one or more times a night
  • Noticeable moments of silence in between periods of loud snoring
  • Gasping sounds
