Clearing up psoriasis myths
Throughout the month of August, the National Psoriasis Foundation is providing tips on how to manage this common skin condition. The itching, patches, scales, and joint pain of psoriasis affect some 7.5 million Americans. Chances are, if you haven’t seen us for psoriasis, a loved one has, or has sought the expertise of a skin specialist. Since it is such a prevalent condition, our team is used to clearing up misconceptions about it on a year-round basis, not just during Psoriasis Awareness Month:
  • Psoriasis isn’t contagious. It’s a chronic autoimmune disease.
  • You don’t develop psoriasis due to inadequate hygiene. As a condition affecting the immune system, it’s believed skin cells can’t keep up with how quickly your body produces new skin. The result is a patchy, scaly, often itchy buildup of skin cells.
  • Psoriasis isn’t just one type. There are several different types, each with characteristic symptoms.
  • Psoriasis doesn’t only affect the health of your skin. It’s linked to other serious medical conditions, including Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, vision disturbances, depression, and anxiety.
There is a lot to know about psoriasis. Don’t hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns.

Some of the most common triggers include:

  • Cold, dry weather
  • Certain medical conditions
  • Infection (commonly strep throat, earache, bronchitis, or other respiratory infections)
  • Diet
