The dangers of root canals
Root canals are one of the most common dental procedures carried out in the country to ‘save teeth’, but it could lead to chronic infections at the site due to the proliferation of bacteria.

Root canal therapy tackles infected and decaying teeth. During this procedure, the decayed parts of the tooth are removed including the root which contains nerves and blood vessels, making the tooth ‘dead’. The canal is then sealed off with an inert material and capped with a crown. This ‘dead’ environment will attract microorganisms like bacteria; since there are no nerves in the canal, the patient won’t feel any pain even while the damage is taking place.

Holistic dentists like Dr. Carlson, Dr. Gilton and Dr. Boswell of Natural Dentistry in Clearwater, Florida don’t see root canals as a solution. Rather, they believe it is part of the problem, as these sites could get infected by the buildup of bacteria, which can then enter the bloodstream, causing serious diseases. Immune responses to the material used, cystic lesions and scar tissue at the site are other dangers. Health is restored when old root canals are removed, they believe.

They recommend biocompatible zirconia implants as a functional, strong and aesthetic replacement for root canals. These eliminate bacterial breeding grounds and the many side effects of root canals. It could be placed after the decayed tooth is extracted. Partial dentures, or bridges made of biocompatible material are other options.

Proper dental hygiene is the best way of eliminating the need for a root canal, Dr. Carlson says. With daily brushing and flossing, regular dental visits for checkups and cleanings, there won’t be any necessity for this cumbersome procedure.
