These symptoms of skin cancer may surprise you …
Skin cancer doesn’t always follow “the rules.” This makes it even more important to keep annual full-body skin checks at our office, and to examine your skin regularly at home. Use a mirror to check hard-to-reach areas, or enlist your partner’s eye so you don’t miss anything. Taking photos of changing areas is also helpful, so we can see how spots have evolved.

You may be familiar with the “ABCDEs” of melanoma: Asymmetry, borders that are ill-defined, spots of more than one color, areas that are large in diameter, or that have evolved; for example, a patch suddenly itches or a mole that was merely bothersome to your appearance now bleeds.

Other often-overlooked signs of cancers such as Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma include:
  • Transparent or white raised spots
  • Scaly or waxy-looking patches
  • Bumps on your lips
Many of these signs can be mistaken for something harmless, like cold sores, a peeling sunburn, or dry skin. And while some areas may look like characteristic melanoma, they may present in places where they can easily be missed, such as the soles of your feet or your scalp. Don’t wait. Call us for your next skin check.
Making the most of your skin cancer screening in Huntington, NY
Skin cancer can develop not only on the skin itself but also on the nail beds of fingers and toes. For this reason, remove nail polish prior to your visit. Also, shortly before your professional screening, perform a self-examination at home. Look at all areas of the body from your scalp to your toes, noting any new moles or growths as well as any changes since your last self-exam. Note characteristics of moles, such as size, texture, itching, and bleeding. According to experts, small changes are best noticed in routine self-exams.
