Do you know your skin cancer ABCDEs?
As you know, you should have an annual skin exam from your dermatologist to check for signs of skin cancer. However, it is equally important for you to know how to perform self-exams at home in between your annual exams to notice any signs of cancer as early as possible. One of the tests your dermatologist may teach you is the ABCDE test.

A is for Asymmetry - Draw an imaginary line halfway down the mole and see if both halves match or if they are significantly different.

B is for Border - Moles and spots should be round, so if your mole has uneven borders, it is a sign something is wrong.

C is for Color - Moles should also be consistent in color, so if one mole has a number of different shades or colors, it may be a sign of skin cancer.

D is for Diameter - A normal mole should not be too large, so if your mole is bigger than a pencil eraser (roughly 1/4 of an inch), it is not normal.

E is for Evolution - If you notice a mole has changed in any way such as in size, color, shape or even elevation, this is a sign something is not right.

Perform a thorough skin exam on yourself every month and check for the ABCDEs. If you notice any of these things, make an appointment with your dermatologist right away for a professional exam. Ask your dermatologist how to perform a good self-exam at your next appointment.
