Brushing and Flossing for Healthy Smiles
With the right care, your gums and teeth can remain healthy for an entire lifetime. The healthier your gums and teeth are, the less vulnerable you are to conditions such as gum disease and tooth decay. Your dentist can provide you with some easy tips and advice on how to look after the teeth and gums.

Firstly, it is important to brush your gums and teeth at least once in the morning and once at night. Try your best to brush your teeth within thirty minutes to an hour after each of your meals. Brushing will help remove the film of bacteria that lies on the surface of the teeth, i.e. plaque. When the bacteria that thrive in plaque come into contact with remnants of your food, they begin to produce acids that cause cavities. Also gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria and to freshen your breath. Once you have brushed for two to three minutes, rinse using mouthwash. It is also advised to replace your toothbrush with a new one, once every three to four months.

Flossing should also be an essential part of your daily routine. This is because flossing helps get rid of plaque and food that lies in between your teeth and in areas where the toothbrush cannot reach. Once the plaque remains between the teeth, it can harden and become tartar which will then have to be professionally removed.
