New research supports gum disease/Alzheimer’s link
Aticle Banner Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the US. There is a known link between gum disease and a host of serious systemic illnesses including diabetes, as well as heart attack, and stroke. A recent study based on data from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database revealed startling facts about risk of Alzheimer’s in patients 50 and older with chronic periodontitis.

Gum disease is caused by overpopulation of certain strains of oral bacteria. They thrive on sugars and starches in the foods you eat, producing an acidic excretion that irritates gum tissue. As inflamed gums loosen, bacteria infiltrate deeper, attacking ligaments and bone. Eventually teeth fall out. Meanwhile, harmful bacteria travel throughout the body.

The Chung Shan Medical University study indicates that those with chronic gum inflammation – for 10 years or more – are 70 percent more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than individuals without gum disease. Long-term, low-grade inflammation seems to play a substantial role.

The good news is that gum disease is largely preventable, and even advanced cases can be managed with proper professional dental care. The team at Smiles4OC in Costa Mesa, CA uses gentle methods to get gum disease under control and manage it effectively. Call 714-557-0700.
