Healthy gums and breast cancer have more in common than the colour pink
Organisations near and far, including the Hong Kong Cancer Fund, are supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Breast cancer is among the 120-plus medical conditions linked to chronic gum disease. A Swedish study in the Breast Cancer Research and Treatment journal noted subjects with gum disease and/or missing molars were two times more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than their counterparts with healthy teeth and gums. Gum disease, bacteria, and common co-infections, such as the Epstein-Barr virus, are thought to promote low-degree chronic infection and carcinogenesis, the process when normal cells become cancerous.

As biological dentists, every technology and technique at our office accounts for that connection between the health of your mouth and the rest of your body. It’s important to control risks that can be controlled, including oral health:
  • Eat nutritious foods; for example, leafy and colourful fruits and veggies contain natural substances that destroy carcinogens responsible for cancer formation.
  • Our licensed nutritionist offers counselling on food and supplements for enhanced health and mercury detoxification.
  • Limit alcohol consumption and avoid tobacco products.
A visit to your holistic dentist is about more than teeth and gums. We look forward to elevating your overall well-being and health!
The global community is taking big steps toward a healthier, mercury-free world. Hong Kong’s support of the Minamata Convention on Mercury goes back to adoption of this UN treaty October 2013. The multinational effort’s first conference is this month in Geneva, Switzerland. Almost 130 countries are collaborating to protect human, wildlife, and environmental health by:
  • Banning or phasing out mercury mines
  • Phasing down mercury-containing products, including dental amalgam
  • Processes to control emissions and releases
  • Addressing waste disposal
A mercury-free and mercury-safe office, we see positive results on a patient-by-patient basis, and look forward to positive effects on a worldwide scale.
